![]() ![]() Finish: Short, caramel, coffee, oak spice.Palate: Honey, apple, orange, oak spice.Buy a bog standard bottle of chivas 12 and a bottle of Glenmorangie 10. Here’s a tip if you want to save yourself some money and have a fantastic dram. ![]() Could also be that I was unlucky with my bottle too. But the more experienced drinkers might find it a bit too bland in terms of nose and taste, finish and overall complexity. I’d say go for it if you’re on a budget, a million times better than JW red label. Maybe I’ll revist it as a budget conscious dram just because why not. I was a big fan of black label as my every day dram a few years back when money was more of a concern, i truly enjoyed that blend. I’d rather spend a bit more and enjoy an entry level single malt like a Glenmorangie 10 when on a budget, even tho prices have gone up and up since covid and all. I’m also a big fan of japanese whiskies.I feel ashamed to say I’m a snob when it comes to my dram. It’s a fine blended malt whisky but my palate has been ruined by the higher end stuff (sipping on a JW Blue as I write, it was a gift). I’ve tried monkey shoulder just because i wanted to see what’s the hype (bought a bottle for the wife and a a glennfiddich 15 which i really liked). I’ve spoiled myself enough to get accustomed to drink some exquisite aged whiskies (22 yo mortlachs, 16 yo ben nevis etc). Unless you coming off the heels of other higher abv, full-bodied monsters you'd be in a safe zone for appreciating a light delightful pour that MS is. But What I do find to be true is that it's pretty well balanced and well blended. Especially this second bottle I opened started off with the negative impressions. And its rough edges not rounded out, low abv, and just cheap jammy sweetness, and mouthfeel etc. I'm still relatively new to this game and my palette is progressing, but imo, MS isn't exactly a "beginner's dram". I respect this blended "expression" for the fact that it would sit comfortably right next to any expensive bottles (if I ever have one) as a major player in this game. It just doens't have a body to it though, and almost feint or zero finish. It has some malty mustiness or funk in the background against those pretty vanilla and flowery notes up front. ![]() It's good for mixing and it's the definition of an easy sipper. Here's my two cents: I think MS carved up a nice niche in the corner of the whisky world. Diageo hyping machine at its full swing is what I'm witnessing here? whatever. I DON'T mean to offend! I'm sorry if I come on too strong but I'm singing Solo against a Chorus of Marketing departments and big corporations decades of tradition ETC. We don't NEED entry level, low ABV chillfiltered scotches.we Have them! I don't support them because I am educated and passionate about quality not because I am a snob! Yes, I know that the low ABV chillfiltered scotches have millions of fans but they can add water to a craft presented scotch and be just fine. later texted me she'd bought a bottle, gotten 2 Glencairn glasses and ordered a T shirt online.įolks simply need to get a proper introduction to proper Scotch Whisky and forget about this entry level scotches bologna and we wouldn't have an Ocean of low ABV chillfiltered scotches that IMHO don't serve anyone but the producers that are just happy to pump it out and rack in the profits. I got a dram of Bunnahabiann 12yr in a Glencairn and did a bit of "Richard Patterson" ( Google if you don't know, smile if you do) and she started with a sniff then another then a bit of a sip, thought about it, loved it, finished the dram. I am not a snob, I'm simply educated, aware of the scam of cheap, so called, entry level scotches.Įxample: my 79yr old Aunt dropped by and spirits came up in conversation and we said she enjoys vodka but had never liked scotch. Craigallachie 13 is $49.99, Bunnahabiann 12yr is $61.99 and Deanston 12 yr is $63.99 none of these are "expensive" costing ,at the most, $24 more than Monkey Shoulders.Īll 3 are far, far, and away superior to MS! But surely not too intense or expensive. In Michigan state minimum for monkey Shoulders is $39.99. The question was 'Is there anyone else that is not a fan of Monkey Shoulders?' I certainly NOT a fan. Recommendations for Visitors to Edinburgh by whisky-lowlander The review can be positive or negative but must be written by you.
